Mars One Review

In the opening scene of the 2018 Brazilian drama Mars One, a young Black child gazes upward as fireworks and shouts accompany the victory of the far-right president Jair Bolsonaro. Is the child peering into the abyss as though he knows what the future holds for his nation? Or is he looking to the stars and a brighter future despite everything?

Where To Watch The Mars One

The film by Gabriel Martins strongly suggests the latter. Mars One, filmed in 2018 and having its world premiere in Sundance’s World Cinema Competition, is a vivid, winningly acted ensemble piece that is likely to appeal to niche markets, broadening the scope of Brazilian Black culture’s representation in that sector where international arthouse blends comfortably with mainstream narratives.

Mars One is a rigid manifesto: operating within the constraints of an accessible family narrative, it has a low-key touch of kitchen-sink drama (emphasized by Daniel Simitan’s mainstream-friendly score) and a somewhat Loachian emphasis on the pressures of the workplace.

The film builds to an unexpected conclusion in which providence appears to play a role, allowing the family to reevaluate its differences and ties and confront the future with philosophical fortitude. As we now know, that future would feature Brazil’s harrowing experience with Covid-19, which gives the film’s debut, four years after it was shot, a painful though ironically affirmative meaning.
