Only $18.6 Million is Made in the First Weekend of “Strange World”

Strange World is expected to lose $100 million at the box office, with many blaming the film’s poor performance on poor marketing.

Strange World debuted in theatres on Wednesday, November 23. Strange World, the latest animated feature from the house of mouse, stars Dennis Quaid, Jake Gyllenhaal, Gabrielle Union, Jaboukie Young-White, and Lucy Liu as a family of explorers who go in search of the energy source that brings life to their home, and despite all of this star power coming together for one film, Strange World has failed to attract audiences. The film is expected to cost Disney around $100 million, according to Variety.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is doing very well at the box office for Disney right now, but Strange World is not doing as well. The movie only made $4.2 million on its first day in the U.S., and it only made $18.6 million in the U.S. over the Thanksgiving holiday, which is one of the worst returns for Disney Animation at the Thanksgiving box office.

Experts think that Strange World’s gross will stop at $100 million because of its slow start. This would be a terrible box office failure for Disney since the film’s production cost is estimated to be around $180 million. Strange World won’t even break even or make a profit. Instead, it will cost Disney a six-figure sum.

People who are hopeful that a big studio like Disney can turn Strange World’s slow start into a box office hit will be disappointed to learn that the movie hasn’t done well at the box office in the past few years. Encanto (2021) started with $27.2 million and ended with a domestic gross of about $96 million and an international gross of $160.7 million.

Lightyear (2022) ended with approximately $118 million domestically and a further $108 million internationally after opening at a far stronger $50.6 million. Strange World would have to do something very different to beat and beat out these other movies.

It is thought that the worrying trend of bad box office results is due to Disney’s pandemic strategy of releasing animated features in theatres and on Disney+ at the same time. Families would rather stream new movies at home than go to the theatre to watch them.

Strange World is still playing in theatres, and people who want to help Disney’s finances can still see it. During the holiday season, it should be available to stream on Disney+. Check out the trailer below to find out what the movie is about:
