ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: Pakistan’s army will deploy 371, 388 troops in over 85, 000 polling stations, Pakistan military spokesperson and DG ISPR Major General Asif Ghafoor said on Tuesday in a presser.
Mr. Ghafoor also clarified that the army will not be directly involved in the voting process and will only ensure free, fair, and transparent national elections on July 25. Furthermore, he explained that two troops will be deployed inside each polling station and two troops will be deployed outside each polling station.
He asked people to vote for the candidates or parties of their choice without any fear.
His comments come days after former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif accused a spy agency of pressuring one of his candidates to change his political loyalty. Mr. Ghafoor says there is no truth to the allegation.
On the other hand, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has decided to suspend all local bodies’ officials including mayors, deputy mayors, chairmen, and vice-chairmen to ensure free and fair election.
